Kitchen Remodel of A-Frame House "AFTER"

Residential Projects - Kitchen

Designer's Notes

Kitchen remodel of A-Frame house at Lake Arrowhead, California

A friend asked me to help her remodel her kitchen at their vacation home in Lake Arrowhead. The goal was to make the most of the limited space and provide maximum storage in an updated design. Goodbye to the rustic cabin feel of yesteryear!

We achieved this by removing the wall between the dining room and kitchen. The existing wall was about 3 feet deep because it housed the cooktop and the refrigerator. By completely removing this visual and physical block, the new space was open to the dining room. A new bench seat was designed and fabricated to custom fit the wall and the slope of the ceiling. This allowed the dining table to be positioned next to the bench, leaving an aisle between it and the new island. The new island provides prep space, storage on 3 sides, as well as seating for three. This creates an open and welcoming space.

The slope of the roof meant that there would be a limited amount of wall cabinets. The kitchen sink was located at the north window, with the quartz countertop wrapping around along the adjacent wall to maximize prep area. The gas cooktop with a down draft vent system was positioned under the other window, taking advantage of the head room. As we turn the corner, open shelves provide storage and an appliance center that utilizes the space under the roof line. The third wall is an efficient combination of microwave above the wall oven, with an adjacent refrigerator and pantry cabinet.

New teak floors were installed throughout the first floor level, adding a warm tone. The original 60” wide sliding door was replaced with a 96” sliding door unit to maximize the view of the mountain and lake. The original windows were also replaced.

The owners wanted a light and airy feeling. This was created by using white shaker style cabinets and painting the wood plank walls and ceiling white. The wall tile is a Carrara mosaic at the sink and cooktop. The new LED lighting provided in the recessed ceiling fixtures and the chrome and white pendants complete the look. The base of the perimeter cabinets are accented with an LED light.

The new kitchen and dining room combination provides a great place to prepare meals and entertain friends and family in this mountain retreat.
